Cleaning the SMART Board

Hi folks,

There have been some questions regarding the cleaning of the SMART Boards. Here is the recommendation from SMART.

The SMART Board interactive white board is a white board. That means you can use the following products to maintain it:

Expo cleaner

Windex

Please do not spray the cleaner directly on the SMART Board. Spray a light amount of cleaner on a soft cloth, and then gently wipe the screen. It is NOT recommended to use Clorox wipes to clean the SMART Board as it contains bleach. NO BLEACH!!

Mini Movies for SMART Board - http://www.misterteacher.com/minimovies/minimovies.html

What is a SmartBoard mini-movie? A SmartBoard mini-movie is a simple (most involve only a click of the mouse), interactive animation that teachers can download and add to their galleries. From there, the movies can be inserted into their SMART Notebook presentations. Each mini-movie is a dynamic Flash file, similar to the same files that are already included in SMART Notebook's resources.

How can mini-movies improve my SMARTBoard activities and lessons? Use mini-movies to make subjects like geometry and motion come alive. Capture the attention of learners by using animation to teach standards-based concepts. Draw on the movies and click the buttons to give students instant feedback!

PBS Kids Whiteboard Activitieshttp://pbskids.org/whiteboard

A wonderful collection of interactive activities you can use on your SMART Board. Divided into different subject areas (Language Arts, The Arts, Math, and Social Science) these activities are designed for primary grade levels (PK-2). Take a look at the site and you will find many different activities that can meet your curricular objectives including letter recognition, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, measurement, patterns, operations, observation, categorization, and much more.

As always, let me know if you need assistance using any of these resources.

Survey Taking - http://www.teacherled.com/2008/01/28/survey-taking/

Math teachers, take note! This interactive website is especially suitable for SMART boards. It is designed to help students understand compiling data from a survey, tracking that data, and charting it in order to better understand data relationships. It contains four canned class-appropriate surveys for the teacher to ask students. Unfortunately, you can’t ask your own surveys but that is not the purpose of this activity. Use this to introduce graphing data, proportions, and presenting data in graphical ways.

Map Skills on the SMART Board - http://langwitches.org/blog/2009/09/02/map-skills-on-smartboard/

What a great idea to teach landmarks and local geography. Go to Google Maps, take a snapshot of the area around your school, load it up on the SMART board and have students place different landmarks on the map. Students then create their own map keys. This would be a great geography project for the lower grade levels. If this is something that you would like to do, let me know and I’ll help you build the project.

Interactive Stories for the SMART Board - http://plattsburgh.neric.org/oak/smartboard/stories.htm

ECC-2 teachers, take a look at this! Nice collection of stories you can display on your board. In many of the stories, students can interact with the characters and respond to different question prompts. Take a look and see what you might use in your classroom.

100 Best YouTube Videos for Education

http://www.smartteaching.org/blog/2008/08/100-best-youtube-videos-for-teachers/

Here is a list of videos that can be used to supplement your curriculum and give inspiration to your students. The list is broken down into categories: History, Science, Language, Arts, Inspiration, Classroom Management, How to Guides, Technology, and Humor. A couple of the videos may not be completely appropriate for classroom use so preview before you show them with your kids. One in particular I like that is reflective of my teaching philosophy is called Pay Attention, written by a friend of mine from Utah.

On a related note, streaming video in your classroom can be dicey at times with respect to our Internet bandwidth. To get around this for YouTube, there is a website called KeepVidhttp://www.keepvid.com – that will allow you to convert a YouTube video to a video file that can then be downloaded to your computer. By doing this, you will avoid any potential buffering issues caused by video streaming.

SMARTBoard Literacy Activities

http://www.lm.havre.k12.mt.us/teachertools/smartboard/reading.htm

These activities are primarily geared for K-5 classrooms. Some of the activities include rhyming words, punctuation, descriptive words, ordering, verb play, phonics, letter/sound identification, and poetry. Give it a spin and find a gem that you soon won’t be able to live without.

Please let me know if you find these resources useful and please share how you would use them in your classroom.

Happy Easter!

Christmas Fun with the SMARTBoard

via Talking SMARTBoards & Much More! by anne marie on 12/11/08

Monday night we watched the delightful Christmas movie “Blizzard” so it got me in the North Pole, Merry Christmas, Sanat Claus, Rudolph, Ho Ho Ho state of mind!  So below are some websites that I  think are particularly worth a look if you are searching for some interactive Holiday activites.

Rudolph is Missing is a wonderful interactive book that takes students on an adventure to find Rudolph for Santa.  As an added bonus, during the adventure students are asked thoughtful questions to answer.  This is definitely a fun activity that works well on the SMARTBoard.

Northpole.com is a wonderful place to find some great Christmas fun! For the SMARTBoard make sure you check out the Elves’ Game Chest  since it is filled with several interactive games including, checkers, word search, crossword puzzle and even a game to reinforce telling time and making change! Santa alaso offers a plethera of free Christmas themed worksheets in a variety of categories for ages PreK-3. In Santa’s Secret Village you will fins more than two dozen original stories with hand drawn or painted artwork. They also come complete with audio! And for the next game, grab your hot chocolate, turn up the volume and have  some fun with Disco Dancing Santa!!

Merry-Christmas.com- this is the jackpot in interactive Christmas games and they all work well with the SMARTBoard.  There are 5 themed Christmas mini quizzes, decorate the Christmas tree, tic tac toe, a Santa puzzle, etc.

The British Council has a couple of fun activities. Santa Rodeo  is a very fun way to have students practice spelling skills.  Two predetermined words appear on the screen and they have to click on the word that is spelled correctly. There are two levels - the easier level being kids and the more difficult level being adults. Students love to see and play this game on the SMARTBoard.  They have a concentration-type Christmas theme game- match the pictures with the words.  Christmas Balloon burst- several balloons with letters on them float through the air and students use the mouse to pop the balloons with the correct letters to spell the word of the picture in the box.  Using the SMARTBoard students enjoy the halleneg of popping the balloons usng thier fingers.

TeqSMART- the marvelously merry guys over at TeqSMART have added some great Christmas/Holiday themed premade Notebook lessons in their Holiday Themed Activities. You have to register to have access to download, but it’s free and well worth it!! So put on your skates and head on over there!!!!

Northumberland has two basic numeracy activities with a Holiday theme: Christmas Tree and Santa.  Both work well on the SMARTBoard.

The WONDERFUL Jim Hollis over at Teachers Love SMARTBoards has a Christmas Holiday Resource page filled with resources, games, activities with a Holiday theme.

SantaAdventCalendar- this is an absolutely beautiful site. Like an advent calendar, beginning on Dec 1st  you click on the number 1 and it reveals the beginning of a wonderful story.  Each day when you click on the next number another chapter is revealed. This would present well on the SMARTBoard, but also would be such a nice activity to do with your children at home.

The last site I want to mention is just a nice way to bring a “guest reader” into your classroom at Christmas time.  Head on over to Storylineonline.com and have Lou Diamond Phillips read one of my favorite stories “The Polar Express” to your students.  It presents awesome on the SMARTBoard– just don’t forget to view it in full screen mode. This site also offers other complimentary activities to use with this book

Ok- time for me to make a hot chocolate (with LOTS of whipped cream) and check in with my friends on Twitter. ENJOY!

UPDATE- I just learned from my friend Richard Byrne over at his amazing blog Free Technology for Teachers about a site called Speakaboos. This site offers free online children’s stories and they have two great Christmas selections: The Fir Tree by Hans Christian Andersen and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. You can watch the stories on line for free or download them to watch in full screen (which would be great to view on the SMARTBoard).  Some features are only available once you complete the free registration.

Basic Senteo Procedure

Below are some basic procedures/instructions for using the Senteo’s in your classroom. If you need more detailed instruction or if you would like for me to come help you set this up with your class, let me know. I’ve helped several teachers already and they are progressing quite nicely! Disclosure: This procedure assumes you have already 1. created a “test” using the Notebook application and 2. created a class list in the Senteo Manager. If you need help with these two items, let me know and I’ll come help you.

  1. Open the “test” file you created using the Notebook software
  2. In Notebook, click on the Senteo menu and then Senteo Manager
  3. In Senteo Manager, open the class list you created (File-Open)
  4. Once both the “test” and the class list are open, pass out the Senteo units to students
  5. Have students join your class and login with the number you assigned them.
  6. Once all students are logged in, go back to the Notebook software and click Start Test.
  7. You will need to click through the test as students are answering questions.
